QHRAI JANUARY 2008 NEWSLETTER
Happy New Year
It’s 2008 and all of us with QHRAI would like to wish all of you the very best wishes and good luck with your horses in the months to come. As most of you know that with the slot legislation passing in 2007 the future of the Quarter Horse racing industry couldn’t look brighter. In 2008 we will run more races, for more money than ever in the history of Indiana.
2007 Recap
In 2007 we ran more races for more money than ever before in the history of Indiana, and the future looks even brighter. We ran 86 races for a total of $798,266.00; we had 257 starters, earning an average of $3,100.00. 25 horses earned more than $10,000.00 and 9 of those earned more than $20,000.00.
The highest money earner was Chics Love Stones, the 2007 winner of the QHRAI SSA RG3 Futurity. This nice 2yr old filly is by the young stallion SC Chiseled In Stone and out of the mare A Campus Chic, she earned $42,533.00 while being owned by Jack Geer, trained by Ron Raper and ridden by Dennis Berryhill. The high money earning Indiana Bred was Scraw Barie Shake (who spelled that?) having only 4 starts in Indiana and accumulating $37,151.00. This nice 2yr old filly is by Royal Shake Em and out of the stakes winning Indiana Bred mare Kelsey Bug. She was owned by the partnership of Davis-Mennen, trained by Cindy Sanders. The high money earning Indiana Sired horse was Easy Dashing Gal. This 3yr old filly ran super strong from the beginning of the Indiana Downs Meet to the end of the Hoosier Park meet and was subsequently named QHRAI horse of the year winning 2 races at each meet, while earning $27,509.00. This nice filly is by the Indiana sire Twaynas Dash and out of the mare Real Easy To Fly. She was owned by Dean Gibbs, trained by Bob Piatt and primarily ridden by Tommy Johns.
There is a complete list of the QHRAI and Breed Development Award winners included in this mailing. For those of you who weren’t sure, we use the AQHA point system for our award program.
2008 QHRAI SSA & Awards Banquet
The turnout for this evening continues to grow; it was a great night, good food and a packed house full of great people, all of this while setting another new record for sales for the stallion service auction. If you haven’t attended this event for a while you really need to put it on your calendar for 2009. As mentioned earlier we had a complete awards presentation, Jim Noel was the “mc” for this, and there were a nice selection of beautiful awards given out. There is a complete list included with this mailing. I think there is no doubt that the quality of Indiana Bred and Sired horses continue to improve and are showing there stuff at both tracks and at all levels of racing. This was clearly highlighted by the honor of Horse of the Year going to Easy Dashing Gal. The process for this selection is that nominees are named by our Directors, (there were 5 nominees) a committee was asked to pick 1 of the 5 for the award. One thing that stuck out about Easy Dashing Gal was her successful race record at both tracks.
The SSA sold 44 services raising $34,175.00, a new record for “night of” sales; there is a list of the remaining services still available on our web site at qtrhrai.com. Once again Ted Begley and Greg Bonfer donated their auctioneering services and Tom Mosley read pedigrees. We would like to give a special thanks to Teresa Gross, your SSA Futurity and Derby Secretary. She has been managing THE fastest growing race of its kind in the country and has been doing a great job. She might go unnoticed the night of the auction because she is running the details of the auction from the sale table and doesn’t get much of a chance to socialize. ANOTHER GREAT JOB TERESA!!! Rick Moore, General Manager of Hoosier Park took the podium and shared construction plans of the facility including pictures of the finished plans. He also had very kind words for the Quarter Horse program in general including the horseman and the leadership of the QHRAI. Mike Brown, Executive Director of the Horse Racing and Breeding Coalition, spoke and updated everyone on a few legislative items and the bright future of horse racing in general in Indiana. Jackie Brown, Director of the Quarter Horse Breed Development program, reminded everyone on deadlines and gave an overview of proposed rule changes.
As we have done traditionally at our banquet we also elected our new directors for the 2008-2010 term. There is a compete list of officers and directors included, but here are the results of the election. Tom Mosley, Mike Gross, and Jim Noel were re-elected; Tina Cleary and Randy Thompson are new additions to the board. Tom Lewis who is a lifetime member and has served on the board of directors for many years will not be serving as a director this year. Tom has been one of the most stable, consistent members of our board and has donated an incalculable amount of his time and services on the behalf of the Quarter Horse racing industry in Indiana. His fair minded opinions and constant smile will be sorely missed. Hopefully he will be back on the board soon. Our deepest and most sincere thanks to him. We would also like to thank Karen Nash for her services as a director for the past 3 years. She has made very long trips to attend our meetings and has played a crucial role at the SSA Awards Banquet. She chose not to run for re-election, we offer our many thanks and wish her the best.
We had another successful silent auction and would like to thank everyone who donated items and also those who purchased items. It takes a lot of effort from a lot of people to organize and run this evening, thanks to everyone involved.
Some Misc. Ramblings
This letter is being written on January 30th, we intend on getting a news letter out every month, usually after our board of directors meetings which are held on the first Tuesday of each month. In the event that there is an IHRC meeting or a specific event that we want to cover in our letter we might wait until after the event so we can get you as current of information as possible. On this particular month there was an IHRC meeting on January 25th in which there were specific changes being proposed regarding rules for embryo transfer and changes to the stallion awards payout. Both items were passed unanimously by the IHRC, and Jackie Brown has posted them on our web site. I think there are too many details involved concerning these important issues to try and describe here. Please feel free to call Jackie Brown at 317-233-0187 or refer to our web site for details. Speaking of the web site, it is in the process of being updated and has had several changes since the first of the year, we intend on revamping the entire site in the near future, but there are definitely updates being made regularly now, so check it out. At our February 5th board meeting we will be setting up several committees involving several different areas. We will be getting another news letter out shortly after that meeting and will have contact names and numbers for you to call with any questions or ideas, we want your input. Things are happening fast here in Indiana since the passage of the slot bill and we need to be acting quickly. We are going to do everything possible via the website and newsletter to keep you up to date. If you ever have any type of question please don’t hesitate to contact one of our officers or directors for information or to put you in touch with someone who can help. I don’t want to forget, at our SSA Awards Banquet we gave out a trainers chart book which had a lot of contact numbers, dates, calendar, a useful training chart for the year and misc. information. We had 110 printed and were out of them in about an hour, we are considering having an additional printing made, but to be honest they’re expensive to produce and we gave them out at no charge, compliments of the 2007 QHRAI Board of Directors, so please contact us if you or someone you know would like a copy, supplies will be very limited.
Talk to you again in February. Tom Mosley QHRAI President
Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana Est. 1966 “Fastest Horses on the Track”
